Dear Lynn Road School Community:
Over the past few weeks, our Green Pride environmental education club started an art mural of a dragon. With the exception of the glue sticks, the mural is made completely from recycled paper collected from our classrooms. What had initially started out as a project for our Green Pride environmental education club has quickly evolved into a school wide initiative with classrooms contributing paper, students volunteering to sort and rip paper, and connecting with our Art Club to create the mural collaboratively. This project serves as a model for our school community on students building the 4 C’s of Learning and Innovation Skills: Critical Thinking, Communicating, Collaborating, Creativty as outlined in the P21 Framework at http://www.p21.org/about-us/p21-framework.
To continue the community feel of the project and to familiarize our school community with the many quality digital resources available to them, we are inviting our families to work together to gather information about dragons around the world. A memo was sent out on Monday, January 26 with information regarding online digital resources available to the students of Lynn Road Elementary. On the memo you will also see the icon for the eWISE inquiry learning model adopted by Instructional Technology Library Media Services (ITLMS) of WCPSS. Our school uses this model to facilitate inquiry based learning. We ask that you use these resources as your information source for this particular project. A template for everyone to use to share their information is available for download at the bottom of this page. The information shared may be concerning dragons in other cultures, or for the nonfiction enthusiasts, the information may center around animals that have dragon in their name, for example, komodo dragons or bearded dragons.
Also, we are encouraging parents to take the opportunity to extend our instruction concerning ethical, safe, and responsible use of information. With that said, please make sure information is paraphrased (put in own words) and credit given to the source of information. The template is designed to allow an area for giving credit to the information source, an area for information sharing, and an area for an illustration.
When completed, please send your completed Dragons Around the World creation to the library to be displayed along with the dragon art mural by February, 6.
