Below are some of the resources we will be using during research.  We are encouraging parents to take the opportunity to extend our instruction and explore the Internet sites as a family.  Please keep in mind, while we promote the Internet as a fabulous source of information, we still recommend that Internet use always be supervised by an adult.  Even with kid-friendly web sites, it is easy to link out of these sites.  This would be a great opportunity for you and your child to continue discussions on Internet safety.

We hope you and your family will enjoy recording your observations of the moon phases in your database.  On days that the clouds and rain obstruct your view of the moon, you can check out the Department of the Navy Moon Phases Images web site at http://tycho.usno.navy.mil/vphase.html This web site allows you to view the phase of the moon on any day between the years 1800 and 2199.  This week students will be identifying the moon phase that occurred on their date of birth.  They also will peer into the future to see what the moon would look like on upcoming dates of interest.

The following are other web sites we may use during the Third Grade Moon Phases Project.  Please keep in mind as with any Internet site, we recommend Internet use always be supervised by an adult.  Even with kid-friendly web sites, it is possible to link out of these sites.

BBC:  Science Clips

One resource we would also like to bring to your attention is NC Wise Owl.  This is a wonderful Internet resource sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and available to public and charter school students of North Carolina.  The web site address is www.ncwiseowl.org.  Go to Elementary School Zone and you will find a large database of Internet resources to help with research and online reading.  We hope you enjoy exploring these web sites together and continue your observations of the moon.

We hope you enjoy charting the moon phases and its pattern of movement in the sky.
